What is Skin? Understanding the Layers of Human Skin

Last updated 3 years ago

Only one millimeter thick and yet the most extensive sensory organ of the body, the skin protects humans from heat, microorganisms, and other toxins and chemicals. Although only the topmost layer of skin, the epidermis, is visible to the human eye, your skin is actually made up of three primary layers, each of which contains multiple layers of different cells with unique functions.

In the video below, learn more about the layers of the human skin and how they function to help humans feel heat and pain, produce vitamin D, and protect against external threats.

As one of the first things people notice about you, and as such a large and complex organ, the skin can present many challenges if not cared for properly. Talk to your dermatologist to understand more about your skin and how to take care of it.
